      <image:title>2013 - Blue and Yellow = Spring No 10</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30, oil $750 First up for the New Year is a continuation of my Blue and Yellow series. Someone asked why I was doing so many in this series. I had two answers. Number one, they continue to interest me in that using only 3 colours is a definate challenge to produce interesting art. Number two, I bought LARGE tubes of blue and yellow paint and I have to use them up. This painting has a definate aquatic feel, the downward streaks of white almost like divers entering the deep blue. What do you see?</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>2013 - Blue and Yellow = Spring No 11</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30, oil $750 Number 11 is light, very balanced with the two yellow "stalks" complimenting each other. It's not nearly spring yet, but this feels like it in this painting: light, airy and happy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2013 - Blue and Yellow = Spring No 12</image:title>
<image:caption>55x22, oil $925 Well, this one was a challenge just to fit on the page. To paint as well, as it is 55 inches across, I had to maintain a flow across a wide canvas that was very narrow. The white section at top is fairly subtle, with white on white cut-outs to create interest. The image does not do justice to it, or to any of my paintings. Come to the Daffodil Gallery or my studio in the Hemingway Centre to see them up close and personal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2013 - Blue and Yellow No 14</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30, oil SOLD and donated to the Lois Hole Foundation. Back to my "Swedish Series". If you are counting the series I skipped one number of ill repute. My first thought was to call it 14 - 1. This is a delightful confection with yellow and green sprays rising into the white with what might be a sunburst to the left. I used a yellow under colour, let it dry and applied paint over it to give more complexity and colour underneath. Note also, the subtle change in name, now that spring is a possibility I've dropped it from the series. This one was sold through silent auction at Night of Artists and the proceeds donated to the Lois Hole Hospital for Women.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2013 - Blue and Yellow No 15</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30, oil $750 I very much like this one, it's more reminiscent of northern lights, which is coincidental with another artist in our studio doing a northern lights series. I wonder which came first? Again there is an under-colour of yellow, varied from left to right in intensity. Once dry I applied more paint over it. To add interest I dragged the corner of a paint knife through the blue to reveal the yellow.</image:caption>

<image:caption>30x30, oil $750 Another in my "Swedish" series. I like the bold sweeping marks and the scraped-bare look of the upper corner. The top portion was under painted in blue with white applied over it once dry, then I scraped the white back so that it was barely there. I used an old credit card, they're great being small and flexible.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2013</image:title>
<image:caption>We came up with a concept of a layered "painting" with the front layer being transparent with the words on it. I used plexiglass attached to struts that go through the canvas and into the support underneath. The words of the poem were printed on sticky film and carefully applied to the backside of the plexiglass. I placed letters to spell out the title of the poem up the side of the canvas, then applied a thick layer of black and white acrylic through which I pulled the letters to leave the unpainted canvas, now in the shape of the letters. Application of gold and some black on the title helped to knock back the gold somewhat, and I hit the plexiglass with a bit of gold spraypaint and added touches of gold to the dried acrylic paint. It was fun, and challenging, and gave me a whole new approach to conceptual presentation of ideas.</image:caption>

<image:caption>18x36. Acrylic. SOLD This was my first piece done with pouring medium. I didn't have a concept or plan in mind, I was just putting paint on the canvas and pouring, dripping, drizzling and spattering medium and paint. Layering with pouring medium is really interesting. Different effects can be achieved by pouring medium over the dry paint or wet paint; by drizzling paint into and onto the medium layer. Different acrylic paints behave differently in the medium. This is great stuff, stay tuned.</image:caption>

<image:caption>18x36x3. Acrylic. $400 Second piece with the new toys. I laid down streaks of heavy paint and medium and let them dry before working with pouring medium. I'm amazed at the transparency of the pouring medium even with other paint in it. As well, the paints don't actually mix to form new colours when in pouring medium, cool and unexpected. A lot of this seems related to fluid dynamics.</image:caption>

<image:caption>36x18x3, acrylic and Mulberry paper $400 I just had to take a break from blue and yellow, I think I was going colour blind. In "Genesis" I return to a long series of imaginative landscapes I have done over the years. I find the size and thickness of the canvas fascinating as they are 3 inches deep and really stand out on a wall. Why "Genesis"? I'm not sure, but it feels very protoplasmic. The start of something.</image:caption>

<image:caption>36x18x3, acrylic and Mulberry paper $400 Another imaginative "landscape", although there really isn't anything that even looks like land in "Sargasso". The swirling action in the painting prompted the name. That calm area in the middle of the Atlantic. Other people have seen very different things in "Sargasso", but I won't mention what. You decide for yourself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>24x36x2. Acrylic. $600 This is my first serious attempt at using the pouring medium and heavy texture achieved with mulberry paper. The photo doesn't really show the almost invisible blobs that show up with high lights and shadows that add interest throughout the red sections. The squiggly gray line ties together the two sections. The title is, of course, "Bitches Brew" after the album of the same name.</image:caption>

<image:caption>12x12x2. Acrylic on wood. SOLD Connie Osgood supplied the wood panel and some glass bead gell for me to try, so I promptly spray painted the panel with gold. Seemed reasonable to me! I kept the following design simple, and yes there is bead gell in it. I have decided to name the following series after song titles from Miles Davis. I absolutely love his music. I think he was the most innovative, imaginative and influential musician since Mozart. And terribly abstract in approach. So, this one is Limbo.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2013 - Blue in Green</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30. Acrylic. $600 This painting originally started as part of an earlier series on buildings, but it just didn't come together so I moth-balled it for several years. Not wanting to throw out a good canvas I applied green and then blue mixed with pouring medium over the left side to cover a geometric shape. The gold side stumped me for a long time, but then I decided to simply sweep the same phthalo blue over it, using ... a BBQ brush. The final design came as a way to unify the two sides using gold squiggles. The women in the studio thinks it looks like a sonogram. Cool! Blue in Green.</image:caption>

<image:caption>36x36x1. Acrylic. $720 I started with the light yellow/green background, then applied the heavy, funky, swirling lines. This stumped me for some time, so I added little swirly bits in yellow and green and waited for inspiration (hey this ain't easy stuff). It did finally come ... add black. So I did! I pumped up the red with layers of pouring medium, although you can't see it well in the photo. And yes, for you other Miles Davis afficianados I spelled Jeru wrong. This is art, after all.</image:caption>

<image:caption>20x26. Acrylic. $460 I created a cool effect, quite by accident, such is the nature of experimentation, by adding swirling lines of tinted pouring medium to a very wet, white canvas. <image:caption>36x36x2, acrylic $720 Whoa, that's green! I was originally aiming for a darker green but with the almost fluorescent paint that I used it wasn't going that way. Oh well, soldier on! The initial paint swirls I added weren't working, so in a bit of a panic I grabbed a squeegee and wiped off part of the green. I wasn't prepared for the great negative shapes, so I kept them. Now I'm incorporating that design into my creativity. It's great when accidents help the plan to come together.</image:caption>

<image:caption>36x36x2, acrylic $720 And this was my first large format piece intentionally working after Lawren Harris's "Beaver Swamp, Algoma". While not a slavish rendition of his work, I see little point in doing that, I think I have captured the look and feel in an updated style. One of my uncles, when seeing a copy of Harris's painting said "Heck, I've got lots of land like that at the bottom of my pasture." <image:title>2014 - Snow and Spruce</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30x2, acrylic $600 I first saw Harris's great painting "Spruce and Snow Northern Ontario" at the Art Gallery of Ontario. It just gleams, snow sparkling and frosty looking. I just had to attempt my own version. I have found that it is better to paint with only a few peeks at the original, otherwise you can get too slavish about copying it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>30x30x2, acrylic $600 This painting started life as a total abstract, but I had a block of what to do with the white stringy lines and the blue. <image:caption>30x30, oil on canvas. $750 While not being a city scape influenced piece it is very urban, looking much like asphalt with lines. The challenge with a black background is getting the other colours to come alive, as the black tends to suck light out of the paint.</image:caption>

<image:caption>30x30, oil on canvas $750 Blue 2 is more of a departure from city scapes, while it has vertical elements they are much less apparently building images. I am experimenting more with heavy layers of paint and dragging it out or removing the centre to give depth and texture. The black and white checker was heavily influenced by Dan Naminga, a Hopi artist that I am particularly impressed with.</image:caption>

<image:caption>30x30, oil on canvas. $750 This was a bit of a return to a city scape abstracted feel. Rather than a single colour of purple I made shades of purple with red and blue, giving me more leeway to add blue and red tones. <image:caption>30x30, oil on canvas. $750 Facing another morning in the studio I decided on red. Okay, progress! Then I decided I wanted to do a very watery effect using lots of walnut oil and solvent. Great, more progress! Then I selected my tube of alizarin crimson, mixed it all up and applied it, added a bit of black for another tone and applied it, then a bit more black and applied it. Then I was faced with the eternal question: "What to do with white"? In a fit of inspiration I used a wide spatula and ran a thick stripe of white down the canvas, then another. Then I stared, had coffee, chocolate, put on some fast jazz, more coffee (my recipe for frenetic, subconsious, inspiration) and returned to apply the subtle white squares. They, amazing, bled slightly into the red for the effect. I'm still impressed with what my subconscious can do!</image:caption>

<image:caption>30x30, oil on canvas. SOLD Well hey, I've used a lot of other colours, why not indigo? It's a curious colour, applied heavily it is almost black, applied light it is almost purple, but not quite either. <image:caption>22 x 55, oil on canvas. SOLD This painting is not at all in the current series that I did as a personal project. We were at the Whyte Avenue Art Walk and were really impressed with a large, flat glass piece that had a glue/green tone with gold flecks and highlights. <image:title>2008 - Tears of Red Buffalo</image:title>
<image:caption>18x36x3 Mixed media on canvas $740 I started on this painting because I wanted to do an animal portrait for an upcoming Guild show, and a buffalo is a powerful figure. I also wanted to continue experimenting with paper on canvas and wanted to do something with heavy watercolour paper that I could fix to the canvas as a second layer that would immediately form depth. The original design came about quickly as I sketched ideas on newsprint. The skull design came from a postcard I picked up at Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump, and the buffalo is done on a heavy watercolour paper that I fixed to the canvas with a lot of acrylic medium. The concept I had was a tribute to the buffalo, and the plains Indian culture that depended on it. But the culture is being lost under the sands of time and the buffalo is barely keeping up. The tears stream down from the lemon yellow sky. The stripes near the bottom are part of the plains Indian habit of dividing objects with primary colours.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2008 - City Blue, Rain</image:title>
<image:caption>24x24x1 Acrylic on canvas $360 With 6 hours in the Studio Gallery it is best to have at least two paintings to work on, so I started this one without any real concept of what I wanted to do. I squeezed a pile of blue paint onto my palette, picked up a medium putty knife and simply smeared it down the middle of the painting. Liking the heavy presence of the blue form I added more, and then scraped some orange across the corner. With some inspection and time I formed a concept and proceeded to add horizontal bits, and then found that I had to fill in the white with green paint, as I hadn't toned the canvas. As it turned out the blue over white comes through brilliant, blue over the green is very dark. I think it evokes a city scape under muted light, with rain and slick roads.</image:caption>

<image:caption>12x12x3, Acrylic on canvas Gifted This is a continuation of my series of small, thick paintings with a predominant gold theme. I chose waves as a sub-theme that prompted me to put in blue above and the semi-transparent greens below.</image:caption>

<image:caption>36x18x3 Mixed Media on canvas SOLD I really like the format of these canvases and I wanted to continue working in the funky silk-threaded paper that can be used for such a heavy texture on the canvas. The horizontal nature of this painting immediately suggested a landscape, so I allowed myself to follow that as a theme. I had a concept of a marsh, logs fallen, others standing and live trees. What followed was not necessarily what I had envisioned, however, I have learned to go with the flow and see where the current takes me.</image:caption>

I am still liking the format of these canvases and I continue to work in the funky silk-threaded paper that can be used for such a heavy texture on the canvas. This started life as a vertical painting while I was at the Whyte Avenue Art Walk, but I decided it worked much better as a horizontal landscape. I decided not to envisage anything until I worked in the paper and filled in some of the gaps. Once I added the blue and let it bleed out I found my "lake" and the rest came together quite nicely. This I have found is a good technique, just have fun, be open to the pattern and see where the current takes me.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2008 - Strife</image:title>
<image:caption>16x20x2 Acrylic on canvas SOLD This painting started life simply with three swooshes of primary red, yellow and blue. I looked at these swooshes for a long time and wondered what the heck to do with them. I put the canvas behind some others and went on with other work. Finally one day I decided to do something, anything, with those darned swooshes. I added gold, and red and black and white and I scratched it and etched it about. Finally it was starting to happen, then I added black around the edges and was appalled at it, so I grabbed a pointy palette knife and dragged the paint into the center. I liked these tooth-like features so I put in more and then filled them in with gold. The title took a while to come to me, but it does remind me of strife.</image:caption>

<image:caption>12x12x3 Acrylic on canvas SOLD This is another in my series of small, thick canvases with a predominant gold tone, although this time I have turned it into a diamond. Using a brush and not a palette knife enabled me to make finer directional strokes in the paint, so that the alizarin crimson appears to recede into the gold, and the purple vertical grounds in the crimson layer. I taped off the rectangular areas and started with the black stripe. From there I added the blue swirling line and the gray-blue one. I like the colour of alizarin crimson but in keeping with a darker tone I added a touch of black and painted the background quickly to give the sketchy look. This just reminded me of little waves on a beach, ergo the name. It's done in thick oils, definitely fun to apply and work, but messy and slow to dry.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2012 - Palm Trees Windy Day</image:title>
<image:caption>24 x 36, mixed media $400 Diane Way suggested in December that our January show should be fun and sun, how about "Palm Trees" (she had just returned from Mexico)? So it was on, a Palm Tree exhibit for the new year. I was standing around one day wondering what to do and wearing blue nitrile gloves. I held my arm up and flexed my hand, it looked like ... a "Palm" Tree. I laughed to myself and said "why not?". So here it is, a series of "Palm Trees" on a windy day on a beach. Could even be Mexico.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2012 - Palm Tree</image:title>
<image:caption>24 x 36, mixed media $400 We were a few pieces short of a full house so I scrambled to do something a tad more serious than my previous painting of "Palm Trees". As I had only a day to produce it I went with charcoal, sketched directly onto canvas and set between layers of fixative. I really got into the charcoal and how it worked into the surface of the canvas and developing lines to simulate palm leaves. Somehow I even worked in a crucifix motif, perhaps it was a subliminal message about palm leaves. Hard to tell, my subconscious rarely talks to me in a clear voice.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2012 - Overpass</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30 oil and charcoal $750 I was walking to the studio one flat, misty, chilly, gray day in February and I came upon the local overpass. It struck me that this strong horizontal feature that was supported by strong verticals in the landscape could make a good subject for a painting. Following on from my charcoal on canvas work I decided to experiment with charcoal in oil paint. So, I used a fair bit of charcoal in with the wet oil paint to create gray tones. I was impressed that the charcoal held it's own in the painting as long as it didn't get coated with paint.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2012 - Blue 2: Bedding Planes</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30, oil $750 In this piece I moved back to my angular forms to continue my series from before Christmas. I was trying to get away from the horizontal and vertical forms I had been creating so I approached this one with a strong diagonal format. For some reason the geological term "Bedding Planes" came to mind, so I tacked that onto the end of the rather prosaic "Blue 2".</image:caption>

      <image:title>2012 - Bronze 1</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30 oil $750 Here I have returned to my series of strong geometric shapes to reflect imaginary urban landscape elements. The simplified structures are eerily reminiscent of tall buildings with a moon rising in the darkening landscape.</image:caption>

<image:caption>30x30 oil $750 The second painting in bronze; I liked the first so much I wanted to pursue some ideas for another bronze painting. Actually in this piece I used only two colours, bronze and black. The light tones are the result of scraping back paint to allow the canvas to show through thereby creating light tones of bronze and black.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2012 - Blue 3</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30 oil and charcoal $750 I continued the geometric urban theme but added the charcoal in the tall form on the left and to darken much of the horizontal surface. I rather like the muted blue colour, the wispy "clouds" were formed by removing paint, while the white "buildings" were done with white paint. The drippy sort-of trees were an interesting touch I created by using a fair bit of solvent in the paint and letting it flow just a little.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2012 - Blue and Yellow = Spring No. 1</image:title>
<image:caption>30x30 oil $600 Spring was upon me and I was feeling very bouncy and energetic when I got into the studio. Still in keeping with a minimalist palette I attacked this canvas with a lot of intense yellow and white, and then poured phthalo blue paint into the white. As I watched the blue paint moving I noticed that it was moving under the wet white paint and forming an incredible textured surface. Awesome to watch. Then I moved on to adding blue to the yellow and watched again a similar interaction between the paints.</image:caption>

<image:caption>30x30 oil $600 Spring series, painting number 2. Oddly enough I couldn't quite duplicate the interactions between the blue and the white paints, the blue refused to flow under the white, so in mild despiration I added raw solvent to the blue and watched it flow all over. Wow! Not what I expected, so I tipped it back and forth to get an interesting running/drippy effect in the blue.</image:caption>

<image:caption>30x30 oil SOLD Spring series, painting number 3. And it all slid sideways on me. The white I had in the middle really wasn't working, so again in despiration (I seem to do a lot of work in this mode) I grabbed a putty knife and pulled it through the middle. And again, then did that with a wide brush, and added white, and pushed it around and around and started to remove paint with a squeegee. Finally it was looking pretty cool, all it needed was the final splash of white, et voila! And it sold in no time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2009 - Gloriana</image:title>
<image:caption>18x36x3 Acrylic and paper on canvas. SOLD This is another painting on the thick canvases that I so like. It started solely as a desire to use the coolest paper I have found to date, it looks all the world like boiled leather, in this case it surrounds the bottom 1/3 of the painting. Once I had applied the paper and I studied it for a while the paper came out as a highly textured landscape, perhaps a planetary surface. With that I was off, although it was not simple. I overpainted several designs until in frustration I added a heavy purple colour up against the paper. This provided the appropriate tonal difference and I could finish the painting in a better frame of mind. This painting really challenged me with the question "How do you know when it's done?" The title? Gloriana was a name given to Queen Elizabeth I by her troops on the defeat of the Spanish Armada.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2009 - Deep n Delicious</image:title>
<image:caption>36x24 Acrylic, paper and leaves on canvas SOLD Deep 'n' Delicious resulted from two disparate events; the first I was in an art store and found the coolest paper made from paper pulp and the skeletons of willow leaves. I didn't know what I was going to do with it, but it was too cool to leave in the store. Second an artist in the VASA studio and gallery was painting an image of apples, another thought she'd like to do her own take on the image, so four of us decided to do our own variations. Of course, mine was pretty abstract. The red and green stripes form a solid background for the lacy leaves and floating apples.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2009 - Water Lillies</image:title>
<image:caption>24x24 Acrylic on canvas SOLD Water Lillies came about as an attempt to salvage a canvas as I had totally botched the painting. I overpainted the canvas with gesso with yellow paint in it. A big mistake, I generated the ugliest yellow ever. I put it behind all of my other canvases for months until one day I resolved to do something with the ugly yellow duckling. Monet came to mind. Of course, water lillies. So I started with a watery blue over the yellow to develop a green base and it just rolled off of my brushes.</image:caption>

I got part way into it and just lost my way, not knowing how to get out of it. I left it for 9 or more months behind my easel until finally I resolved to finish it. I added black, white, more gold and a few other extras that improved it considerably. Event Horizon, the point of no return for entering a black hole. <image:title>2009 - Nishikigoi</image:title>
<image:caption>18x36x3 Acrylic on canvas SOLD "Where did this come from? I asked myself." I started with bright yellow streaks across the canvas and on the top I thinly layered magenta. It wasn't really doing anything for me so in a bit of a panic I grabbed a little squeegee and removed some of the magenta. "Oh cool!, I says, "I like that." So I left the bits of yellow peaking out. This is often how my paintings progress, through experimentation and panic. I wish I could say it was carefully thought out, but so far the best haven't been. Not sure of what to do next I decided that the yellow on the bottom would actually be good as green under a thin layer of blue, so that's where I went. I got the feeling of water and, as orange works well with blue I added blobs of orange and suddenly koi started jumping, so I added yellow and speckles. The title? According to Wikipedia Nishikigoi is the formal Japanese word for koi. At the Whyte Avenue Art Walk I mentioned this to a Japanese exchange student. She was simply puzzled. Perhaps it was my accent.</image:caption>

<image:caption>18x36x3 Acrylic and paper on canvas LOST!!! Yet another thick and long canvas. This I started last year and got to putting something on the top "stone" and stopped. Dead-in-my-tracks! I tried all sorts of symbols, sayings, Japanese, Arabic, Wickan. All sorts. Finally I just decided I have to finish it, so I looked up this Egyptian symbol, which they called "wedgat" better known as "The Eye of Horus". It was said to ward off evil and was used in the ceremonial tombs of pharohs on their way to the after-life, cause even they needed to ward off evil. It was derived from the eye markings on a Peregrin Falcon as Horus was the sun god, and what flew closest to the sun? Falcons. This one has been LOST by the artist! Indeed, I have no idea where it is. If anyone has it, or finds it let me know. I'd just like to know where it is.</image:caption>

<image:caption>36x36x2 Acrylic on canvas $700 Another series under development, 3ft by 3ft canvases of vague, abstracted city scapes. This I used a lot of silver and pearlesence to simulate early morning fog in backlit city streets, with a sunrise and tall buildings. What city? What sunrise? I can't tell, although someone thought it was Toronto. Could be! Both of our kids live there. That subconscious will come through.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2009 - Southland: Saskatchewan</image:title>
<image:caption>24x24x2 Acrylic on canvas $300 The third of my series under development (two paintings is a series), this is a very fragmented and abstracted landscape with only enough information to give you the feeling of a landscape. My current issue is whether to give them a title that gives the viewer a hint of my intentions, or to give it a non-title and let the viewer develop their own perspectives of what the painting is about. Many people see mountains or the west coast. Oh well, my inspiration was southern Saskatchewan.</image:caption>

<image:caption>36x18x3, mixed media on canvas. SOLD This started as a public display of painting during the local Solstice Festival. I wasn't very happy with my progress on my original design so I left it for several weeks. In a burst of energy I grabbed a wide putty knife, squirted yellow and white onto it and hit the painting all over and left the room. After several days I looked it over and liked what I saw so I continued with the theme, adding the stringy bits of paper and using very dilute blues and purples they came to life as sort-of rain clouds. Oh well! A hundred years from now no one will know the difference. This piece was NOT inspired by Vancouver, it is simply a rather somber piece of cityscape, as cities often are. I had to work like heck to pull this one together, the linear "streets" just didn't cooperate until I attacked them with a reddish-brown over the silver that I had first applied. Go figure! <image:caption>36x36x2, Acrylic on canvas. $600 This is part of my continuing series on the city and it's relationship with the surrounding land. My inspiration for this piece and the next several was flying into Vancouver one evening. We must have come past the airport towards False Creek with it's monster condo-towers, for in the evening the translucent white/blue/green towers rose by and masked the mountains of North Vancouver. It was stunning! This particular piece is more about the spread of cities into valleys, encroaching on wildlands.</image:caption>

I'm using a high vantage point, there is no hint of ground close to the viewer. I wanted to build an inner glow from the buildings against a dark sky and forest as night falls. <image:title>2006 - Earthscape I, Prairies</image:title>
<image:caption>24x24, acrylic and oil on hardboard. $360.00 During the spring and summer I also began a series of abstract aerial landscapes. I have always been fascinated with landforms as seen from the air, and began to express this interest in an abstract genre. From reading on abstract theory, I adopted a square format to avoid any implications of a horizontal versus vertical format, using hardboard to support the layers of acrylic. Using symbology I depict some of the landforms seen on the Canadian Prairies.</image:caption>

<image:caption>24x24, acrylic and oil on hardboard. $360.00 Following "Prairies" I did this painting from memories of flying over Fort St. John and being amazed at the amount of human intervention into the forests of the area. There were roads, cutlines, oil wells, fields, burned areas and some forest.</image:caption>

<image:caption>8x24, oil on canvas. NFS. This is a fairly abstract depiction of my wife's side profile while sleeping. It took several months as I was continually frustrated by the shadows on the pillows. I was not pleased with the final effect, but it was time to move on.</image:caption>

<image:caption>18x24, oil on canvas. SOLD The theme for the October St. Albert Painter's Guild art show was "The Colour of Music", so I attempted to capture the swirl and tones of Miles Davis's Kind of Blue. A doctoral student from the Netherlands requested permission to use the image for the front cover of his PhD dissertation. I agreed. After finishing his PhD in medicine he purchased the work and sent me a copy of his thesis. Tres cool!</image:caption>

<image:caption>24x24, acrylic on canvas. $260.00 This was my first painting with Eric and so I actually had a concept when I started of a lake, or marsh. People at my office thought it looked like Lake Wabamun after an oil spill, ergo, the name.</image:caption>

<image:caption>24x24, acrylic on canvas. SOLD. Again the folks in my office thought up the concept of what this looked like, a very bad day driving in winter. So, it had to be a "Blue Monday". The white line through it helps to push everything else to the background.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2006 - Butterfly Nebula</image:title>
<image:caption>24x24, acrylic on canvas. SOLD The final painting in Erik's course, I was experimenting with heavy texture when he suggesting simply wiping the palette knife through a bunch of the built up textures with a swirling movement. Again, the white spatter across it pushes the rest further back into the painting. Amazing results! Some people see an Indian in a head dress, others butterflies, I see a nebula. I liked how the white and yellow spatters pushed the other paints into the background.</image:caption>

<image:caption>24x24, acrylic on canvas. Gifted to a wonderful co-worker. This was the third painting with Erik, he encouraged us to use everything we had available to move the paint, including banging it on the floor. Not having a preconceived concept of the painting prior to starting makes it somewhat difficult to name them. However, the people in my office insisted this looked like a flower garden, so I provided a name reminiscent of flowers, but not quite.</image:caption>

This is intended to evoke the work of Mark Rothko, one of the founders of color field painting, although this isn't a field of paint.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Renewal Alberta Rose. Acrylic. 24x24. $480 This was created as a commission for: Healing After Wildfire (HAW), a greeting card project by Tearoots.org in collaboration with the Edmonton’s 10th Poet Laureate (2023) and Layton Prize winner (2022), Shima Robinson. The pink Alberta Rose provides spiritual cleansing and protection for People of the First Nations in the flat central plains and Rocky Mountains of Canada. Rose hips provide jams, jellies and tea, with more vitamin C, calcium, phosphorous and iron than oranges. The petals, buds, young leaves and hose hips are also eaten by the local animals and birds. The rose essence closes skin pores and improves skin tone, boosts immune systems, relieves cold/flu symptoms, and is an aphrodisiac. The digital version was commissioned by Tearoots.org a non-profit in San Francisco, USA. Check them out: tearoots.org.</image:caption>
