After moving on from Laura Watmough's class I worked independently for most of 2005 working on landscapes mostly, in oils, with a first self-portrait just to humble myself. I joined the St. Albert Painter's Guild in the fall of 2005 in time for their October show. Several of these were in my first public art show.
Canola Field Evening
Oil on canvas, 12x18. Collection of the artist.
This is my personal favourite from 2005. I did it in my home studio from a field sketch. This was a very satisfactory method as I could see the brush strokes in the field sketch and could duplicate them, or enhance them in the studio. The trick is not to lose the immediacy of the sketch.
Cliffs Along the South Saskatchewan River
Oil on canvas, 36x24. Not For Sale
This was the largest painting to date and was a lot of fun to do. This one I did in my studio from photos as I didn’t have time or materials to paint when I was in Medicine Hat. I keep meaning to correct some parts of it, but I just haven’t so it isn’t for sale.
Night Flight I
Oil on canvas, 11x14. SOLD
This and it’s companion below were inspired by an evening flight.
Night Flight II.
Oil on canvas, 11x14. SOLD
Early Spring Field
Oil on canvas, 11x14. SOLD
Inspired by a pond in a field in early April. It reminded me of an eye, yet the trees reflected in it had a haunting look.
Self Portrait at 48
Oil on canvas, 11x14. Collection of the artist
This is my first, and only, attempt at a self portrait using a mirror. If it looks a bit odd, it is. I discovered only after completing it that the mirror was not square to my face, thereby distorting it. A good learning experience though.
Sunrise on the Way to Work
Oil on canvas, 11x14. Donated.
This was inspired by a sunrise on the way to work. I took a quick photo as I drove, which provided a very abstract blurred and muted image.
Trees Along the Sturgeon River
Oil on canvas, 10x12. SOLD (now I just have to find it!)
A small study done in a more fluid, Group of Seven, style.
Picton Castle
Oil, 8x12. SOLD
An intern whom I hired worked a year on the Picton Castle sailing around the world. Mighty cool and brave, but that was her!
